How To Select The Most Suitable French Bedroom Furniture

If you're thinking about buying French bedroom furniture it is important to consider not only the variety of styles and options available to you, but also the variety of furniture and the way in which it can work together to create a truly outstanding result. It's interesting when looking into the idea of French bedroom furniture how the names seem to make items of furniture seem more appealing, more elegant, stylish and romantic.

In most bedrooms a wardrobe is simply a wardrobe, but in a French inspired bedroom it becomes an armoire, a closet of secrets, an item of furniture more to be admired than simply used. It is the same with a chaise longue, which certainly sounds far more appealing and romantic than an item of furniture referred to merely as a long chair.

But it is important to remember that when choosing French bedroom furniture you make sure that you commit to your chosen style completely, because mixing styles of French furniture simply doesn't work at all. A lot of people don't always realise there are so many different styles of French furniture, and can end up mixing and combining different styles in a way which just simply doesn't work. It's like having the pieces from three or four different puzzles and wondering why you can't create a single picture that looks right.

It certainly isn't the case that if bedroom furniture is French, or the style at least is French inspired, that it will work perfectly with all furniture which is similarly French inspired. Baroque French furniture from the Louis XIV period is grand, bold, fairly serious, and often includes decorations relating to religion, politics or philosophy. This baroque period gave way to the frivolous rococo period typical of Louis XV which took the idea of flamboyance and fun for such a long walk that it almost forgot where it was going.

Rococo styling is often asymmetrical, with fancy detailing relating to the natural world, animals, shells and flowers, and trying to combine this frivolity and fancifulness with the austere seriousness of baroque style French bedroom furniture is always going to result in a fairly unbalanced and unhappy marriage of styles.

From the chaise longue to the armoire, from the French bed to the ornate French mirrors, every item of French bedroom furniture needs to be from the same period, or at least inspired by the same period of French styling.

One of the most popular styles at the moment is the shabby chic look, but even this can sometimes be closer to baroque than rococo, and may even have hints of neo-classical influence in some cases. The neoclassical styles are easy to spot, because there is no frivolity, very little in the way of engraving or details, and much more in the way of straight lines, geometric shapes and styling reminiscent of Roman or Greek architecture.

It's important to make sure you know the sort of style of French bedroom furniture you're after, and then stick to that style for every item of furniture, from the chaise longue to the mirrors, because by doing this you will end up with a truly stylish bedroom that feels exactly as it should.
